Volunteer Directors needed to help make a lasting difference to Young People in London

Put your business expertise to good use and become a pivotal part of the effort to support young people across the capital.

About us

Epic CIC supports over 5,000 children and young people annually, helping them to overcome a range of challenges - unemployment, absence from school, lack of qualifications, mental and physical health problems, living with a disability, substance misuse issues, youth crime and gang problems and others. To help young people address these issues and prepare for adulthood, we operate a range of high-quality services, including; sport & outdoor education, health and wellbeing, employability and alternative education, arts and citizenship.

We are looking for a number of committed people to join the Epic CIC Board as Non-Executive Directors. We are hoping to recruit individuals with demonstrable skills and expertise in some of the following areas:

  • Commercial acumen and business experience – particularly those with a high profile development and growth track record in either the commercial, social enterprise or charity world
  • Local authority knowledge – especially those with senior level experience of working within Children and Youth Services.
  • Strong accountancy or financial background – with excellent understanding of the key financial drivers to create business sustainability
  • Procurement and contract commissioning – with knowledge around securing existing and new public sector contracts.
  • Marketing and communications – especially of externally positioning organisations.

Why get involved?

This is an exciting challenge and a unique opportunity to be involved in a new and innovative approach to Youth provision. We hope you can put your business skills and experience to good use and help make a major contribution to improving the lives of some of our most disaffected young people.

Our work has attracted both local and national interest and is at the forefront of the public sector reform agenda. It has support at the highest level of Government and locally from the Council and the wider community.

A key factor in achieving our ambition is having excellent governance arrangements in place with a strong board of directors that includes elected staff representatives, service users and external Non-Executive Directors. We are keen to strengthen our experience of the commercial world to help shape and implement our business and delivery model in a changing market place for Youth Services and ensure that our social enterprise succeeds.

The Roles

We are looking to recruit at least four Non-Executive Directors who will join our management board over 2017. Our Board of Directors consists of external Non-Executive sitting alongside staff members elected by their peers. All Board members strive to ensure that EPIC achieves its social mission while remaining financially stable and legally compliant.

The current Board has supported Epic from inception in 2014. Tenure is due to expire for some members and we are therefore seeking an immediate replacement plus others to join the Board in a phased manner to maintain business continuity.

As a minimum, we expect the following commitments:

  • Attendance at monthly Board meetings and annual AGM
  • Involvement on half day strategy away day with the Epic Business Management Team
  • Provision of ongoing advice and guidance to the MD/senior managers from time-to-time

An induction programme will be offered including mentoring by existing Board members. There will be an opportunity for you to visit Epic services and meet staff and young people. The role is not remunerated but you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you have played an important role in setting disadvantaged young people on the road to success.

It is an exciting time as we seek to build on lessons learnt during our first three years in order to develop a dynamic social business. We operate a ground-breaking business model which is growing in the public sector.
